What’s in a Name?
There’s a growing belief that interstitial cystitis and chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome may be the same disease. The conditions show a large amount of symptom overlap and neither has a clearly definable cause.230 However, in general, women are more likely to be diagnosed as having interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome and men are more likely to be diagnosed as having chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain.231 Although there is certainly recognition that interstitial cystitis affects men, specific research studies on its treatment in men are few and far between. Fortunately, what literature there is suggests that treatments for CP/CPPS, as well as treatments for interstitial cystitis in women, may help men with interstitial cystitis as well.
